Resultats de la 1a convocatòria d’IAPP

Some 103 proposals were submitted in response to the first Marie Curie Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways Fellowships (IAPP) call of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), which closed on 31 May. Having passed the first phase of evaluation, 41 project proposals will now be put forward for a second round of evaluation. The projects most eligible for funding will be those that involve the transfer of technology and know-how between industry and the academia.

With a total budget of €38.5 million, the call seeks to open and foster dynamic pathways between public research organisations and private commercial enterprises, including in particular small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).

Convocatòria oberta de COST

El proper 30 de setembre és la data de tancament de la convocatòria oberta de COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). Les propostes presentades a COST han de consistir en accions que contribueixin al desenvolupament científic, tecnològic, econòmic, cultural o social d’Europa.

COST finança accions de “networking” entre activitats finançades per programes estatals, com per exemple reunions, conferències, congressos, intercanvis científics a curt termini, etc. El finançament típic d’una acció COST és d’uns 100.000 € l’any, durant quatre anys. Els sol·licitants d’una acció COST cal que participin en un programa de recerca d’una institució d’un estat membre de COST.

COST està gestionat per la European Science Foundation (ESF) i rep finançament de la Comissió Europea per mitjà dels programes marc de recerca.

Oberta una convocatòria conjunta d’ICT i Seguretat

La Comissió Europea ha obert una convocatòria conjunta de Tecnologies de la Informació i les Comunicacions i Seguretat, el termini de la qual és el 29 de Novembre de 2007, a les 17:00h.

La convocatòria és oberta als següents temes i topics:

ICT Theme: Pervasive and trusted network and service infrastructures / Critical infrastructure protection
Topic called:
- Technology building blocks for creating, monitoring and managing secure, resilient and always available information infrastructures that link critical infrastructures.

Security Theme: Security systems integration, interconnectivity and interoperability
Topics called:
- Risk assessment and contingency planning for interconnected transport or energy networks
- Modelling and simulation for training
- Optimised situational awareness through intelligent surveillance of interconnected transport or energy infrastructures
- ICT support for first responders in crises occurring in critical infrastructures

Resultats 1a fase de les Starting Grants (ERC)

El Consell Europeu de Recerca (ERC) ha finalitzat la primera fase de l’avaluació de les “Starting Grants”. De les 9167 propostes rebudes, 559 han estat seleccionades per a la segona fase del procés d’avaluació. Fa pocs dies, els candidats seleccionats van rebre les cartes d’acceptació corresponnets, on se’ls convida a enviar les propostes completes abans del 17 de setembre. Els candidats que no han estat seleccionats en aquesta primera fase rebran una carta, així com l’informe de l’avaluació, a principis d’agost.

Conference on open access

A conference entitled ‘Berlin 5 Open Access: From Practice to Impact: Consequences on Knowledge Dissemination’ will be held in Padova, Italy, from 19 to 21 September.

The aim of the conference is to bring together the various initiatives and key players within the Open Access movement in order to:

- maintain the enthusiasm of all people involved in the Open Access field;
- provide an overview of the developing tools that sustain Open Access in scientific data and cultural heritage dissemination;
- develop effective strategies that can contribute to the construction and implementation of this new paradigm of the scholarly communication world.

La Direcció General per Educació i Cultura de la CE ha publicat la convocatòria de “Projectes pilot de cooperació entre instituts tecnològics europeus”. El termini per presentar sol·licituds finalitza el dia 15 d’agost de 2007.

Building knowledge in communities

A conference entitled “Communities building knowledge: innovation through citizens’ science and university engagement” will take place from 30 August to 1 September in Paris, France.

The conference will provide a forum to discuss and share information on community-based research, carried out in both community and academic settings.

The conference will address the following themes:
- university engagement with communities;
- citizens’ science and social movements;
- research policy – from local to global;
- innovation and citizens – added value for communities;
- participatory processes in science and technology;

Universities and the market

An international symposium entitled ‘The University in the Market‘ will take place from 1 to 3 November in Stockholm, Sweden.

The symposium will address the challenges and opportunities arising from the increased pressures on universities to develop open interfaces with the business world, and increased competition between the universities themselves as a market for students.

The participants will debate such questions as: Are the old values now outdated? If not, how can they be reconciled with these new ‘values’? How can university ‘business’ reconcile a real need for income with concepts of academic freedom, productivity, and the pressure for the institution to contribute to economic growth of society?

The symposium is organised by the Academia Europaea.

Kaleidoscope 2007 Symposium

Kaleidoscope, a European research network in the field of technology-enhanced learning (TEL), will hold its 2007 symposium in Berlin, Germany on 26 and 27 November.

The event will bring together Europe’s leading scientists in the field of technology-enhanced learning with a diverse set of stakeholders including policy makers, industry representatives, and end-users. At the two-day event participants will discuss the latest developments and future research priorities relating to the use of technology in learning. The symposium serves to demonstrate the impact, excellence, key synergies, and value of research in the field.

Participació de Suïssa a l’FP7

Les institucions, empreses, i altres entitats suïsses podran participar sense cap restricció en el 7è Programa Marc, després de la signatura d’un acord de cooperació científica entre Suïssa i la Unió Europea. Aquest acord permetrà que els científics suïssos puguin participar en igualtat de condicions que els de la UE en totes les convocatòries del 7è Programa Marc, incloent-hi les que ja s’han obert des de començaments d’any (anteriors a la signatura de l’acord).

Nova JTI de Nanoelectrònica

La Comissió Europea ha encetat una nova Iniciativa Tecnològica Conjunta (Joint Technology Initiative, JTI) dedicada a la Nanoelectrònica. Es pretén que aquesta nova JTI esdevingui la plataforma per al desenvolupament i introducció de nous productes i serveis en un ampli ventall d’àrees, incloent-hi l’electrònica de consum, la indústria de l’automòbil, la salut i la gestió mediambiental.

La iniciativa, anomenada ENIAC (European Nanoelectronics Initiative Advisory Council) disposarà d’un pressupost de 3000 M€. S’espera que el 60% d’aquest pressupost s’obtingui de la indústria, mentre que la resta serà proporcionat per la Comissió Europea i els estats que participen en el projecte.

ScanBalt Forum 2007

The ScanBalt Forum 2007 will be held in Gothenburg, Sweden on 4 and 5 October. The focus of this year’s event will be science innovation and bio-entrepreneurship.

ERA public consultation

The European Commission invites citizens and other stakeholders to contribute to the development of the European Research Area (ERA) by participating in the online ERA consultation. The consultation takes the form of a questionnaire, the contents of which reflect and expand upon the questions and issues raised in the Green Paper “The European Research Area: New Perspectives”.

The results of the online consultation will be used by the Commission, in conjunction with other inputs, to support proposals for the future development of ERA. These proposals will be published in 2008.

The public consultation was launched on 1 May 2007 and will be open until 31 August 2007.

FP7 – ICT event in Budapest

A partnering event entitled ‘FP7-ICT cooperation market for successful international networking with focus on broadband communications’ will take place on 5 July in Budapest, Hungary, as part of the 16th Mobile and Wireless Communication Summit.

The networking event, co-organised by five EU-funded projects (EPISTEP, HAGRID, Hungary for FP6, Ideal-ist, Star-Net), will have the twin aims of increasing awareness of Strategic Research Agendas (SRA) of European Technology Platforms (ETPs) and their status in the forthcoming calls, and secondly helping researchers find partners for future proposals in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Applications.

The morning of the event will feature plenary sessions on the SRAs of the ETPs, while the afternoon will be devoted to bilateral meetings.

ERC Statement on the 2007 Starting Grant competition

The European Research Council (ERC) has provided further information on the 9,167 applications received for the ERC’s first round of grants, the Starting Grants for independent researchers.

In April the ERC’s Scientific Council announced how many applications had been received, and the figure of 9,167 was much higher than many were expecting. Now the Scientific Council has given details of how many of the applications address each of the three domains outlined in the call for proposals, which countries the applications have come from, and how many people have applied to be a member of the evaluation panels charged with reviewing the proposals.
